A premier hot spring destination of national renown, where inns cluster closely in a valley along the Tanohara River, the source stream of the Chikugo River. Based on the concept that "the entire hot spring town is one inn," colorful signage is eschewed and the townscape is preserved with its characteristic black and dark woods. Walking the stone-paved paths and the famous slope called "Igozaka," you are enveloped in the mountain-village atmosphere woven by hot spring steam and green foliage. At midday, enjoy hearty local cuisine—Akagyu (red beef) and country dishes—at atmospheric restaurants. After eating, enjoy walking food items like hot spring dumplings, pudding, and filled pastries in hand, listening to the murmur of the stream as you wander from alley to alley. Because it is a small hot spring town spread like a furoshiki cloth, leisurely strolling is the greatest pleasure.
Tips
The central area of the hot spring town has narrow roads, so park at lots near Kaze-no-Sha (the information center) and explore on foot. Stone pavement and slopes are common, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Popular lunch restaurants have queues, so arriving slightly early is recommended.

Approximately 2 hours. Arriving before noon to have lunch first, then proceeding to afternoon food-stall snacking, is most efficient
