A mysterious scenic spot on gently rolling grassland near Mazeno Gorge in Minami-Oguni Town, with large and small megalithic stones dotting its summit. Headlined by the largest "Oshido-ishi" stone, the megaliths—some said to indicate directions, others believed used in ancient rituals—stand out against the green grassland, stirring ancient wonder. The phenomenon of compass needles wavering around the stones is also known, making it irresistible for mystery enthusiasts. Most striking is the view from the hilltop, where an unobstructed 360-degree panorama stretches from the Aso Five Peaks to the Kuju Mountain Range. Ascending the hill buffeted by grassland-crossing breezes offers a sense of exhilaration like a scene from a movie.
Tips
The ascent from the reception to the hilltop involves climbing a grassy slope for about 10 minutes, so wear comfortable hiking shoes. The hilltop has no protection from sun or wind, so adjust clothing with a hat or jacket. Borrowing a compass at the reception to test the magnetic disturbance around the stones is another enjoyable aspect.
