A majestic grassland at an elevation of approximately 900 meters stretching between the two mountain groups of Aso and Kuju. The Yamanami Highway, famous as a scenic drive route, runs through it, offering a location that overlooks the Aso Five Peaks to the south and the Kuju Mountain Range to the north—truly the center of Kyushu's roof. Rest stops with drive-in restaurants and cafés cluster here, where you can take a break with soft-serve ice cream or plateau-specific treats while enjoying the vista. At dusk, the grassland tints madder-red and the mountain silhouettes stack in layers—a breathtaking sight. It is the perfect place to conclude your day's journey lingering in afterglow, accompanied by the plateau's wind.
Tips
The plateau is cooler than town areas; evening especially gets chilly, so bring a light layer. Scenic viewing spots dot the area; walking a bit from parking lots to find vantage points is recommended. Before heading back, confirm fuel levels.
