A white Romanesque church standing on a hillside along Amakusa's west coast. Known to have been built by Father Garnier, a French missionary who devoted his life to spreading the faith after the prohibition of Christianity ended, working alongside local believers. The sight of the white sanctuary set against the blue sky, framed by the green of the rural landscape, is one of Amakusa's iconic images, and from the hilltop you can see out over the Ōe settlement and surrounding mountains. At the base of the hill stands the Amakusa Rosario Hall (天草ロザリオ館), a museum conveying the history and daily life of hidden Christians. Visiting both sites will deepen your appreciation of the Saki Tsu Village walk to follow.

Tips

Since the church remains an active place of worship, please visit the interior quietly and refrain from photographing inside. The church may not be open during masses or special services. The path to the hilltop involves climbing, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
