About this spot

An art museum in the heart of Oita City affectionately known by its acronym "OPAM." Designed by architect Shigeru Ban, the building is wrapped in wooden lattice and glass inspired by Oita's bamboo crafts heritage. When the glass doors open, the building becomes continuous with the street, creating an open design where the building itself is a sight to behold. The bright atrium is free to enter for everyone, and the collection exhibition allows you to leisurely appreciate works by artists connected to Oita. The museum shop is renowned for its refined selection of crafts and stationery, perfect for souvenir shopping. The museum adds a quiet and pleasant art experience as the perfect conclusion to your day of sea and mountains.

Tips

The atrium and shop can be enjoyed without an admission ticket. Collection exhibitions are free for high school students and younger. Temporary exhibitions have separate admission and content varies by period, so check in advance if interested. The museum is large, so planning your viewing by working backward from closing time allows for a more relaxed visit.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Late afternoon light shining through the glass makes the atrium at its most beautiful.
