The residence built by the former Usuki domain lord Inaba family as a lodging place during their hometown visits after relocating to Tokyo following the Abolition of the Han. The building retains strong elements of traditional samurai architecture, with successive formal writing-room style parlors, and a polished corridor offering beautiful views of the green garden. Sitting in the parlor and gazing at the garden quietly evokes the lifestyle of the daimyo family. Adjacent to the property stands the Former Hirai House, a residence of upper-ranking samurai, and viewing both together provides a more three-dimensional understanding of the castle town's samurai culture. After your walk along the stone-paved streets, spend the latter half of your journey leisurely at this quiet residence.

Tips

Remove your shoes before entering the residence, so wear easily removable shoes for comfort. Both the Lower Residence and the Former Hirai House can be viewed together, so take time to visit both thoroughly if possible. Be sure to plan time to sit in the parlor and appreciate the garden view.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes required. The soft afternoon light filtering into the garden and parlor offers the most atmospheric experience.
