Narrow lanes carved through a tuff rock hill formed by ash flows from Mount Aso, where white-walled temples and samurai mansions line the streets—the most picturesque area of Usuki Castle Town. This stone-paved path, selected as one of "100 Japanese Urban Landscapes," transforms with each step, with the wet stone pavement shimmering dully and looking particularly photogenic after rain. At dining establishments in the area, you can savor Usuki's unique local dishes such as kirasu-mameshi (fish pieces dressed with okara) and kiro-meshi (rice dyed golden with gardenia). After lunch, be sure to stop by the former Shinkoji Temple, now opened as a rest area, and enjoy a moment gazing down at the stone-paved slope from its second-floor window.

Tips

Stone paving becomes slippery in rain or just after rain, so wear shoes with sturdy soles. Popular dining spots get crowded during lunch hours, so arriving a bit early or late helps ensure smooth service. The lanes are narrow with elevation changes, making a baby carrier easier than a stroller for those with small children.
