Hand-Carved Tunnel Said to Have Been Chiseled by Zen Priest Zenkai
About this spot
This tunnel was carved through the cliff of Kyoshumine (競秀峰), which looms dramatically above the Yamakuni River, by Zen Priest Zenkai, who legend says used only a chisel and mallet over approximately 30 years. This location was once a treacherous passage where travelers clung to chains along the cliff face, and many lost their lives there. Moved by their suffering, Zenkai is said to have gathered funds through alms-begging while continuing his work. The tunnel is famous as the subject of Kan Kikuchi's novel "Beyond Enmity" (恩讐の彼方に). Today, chisel marks and openings for ventilation and light remain in parts of the passage. The view created by the oddly-shaped rock of Kyoshumine looming overhead and the river's flow is one of the gorge's signature vistas.
Tips
A free parking area is available near the grotto entrance, and the old road section is passable on foot. The modern road is narrow and traffic in the tunnel is one-way controlled by signals, so drive carefully. The chisel marks and light openings are only visible on foot, so be sure to park and take a walk.
Best time to visit
Approximately 50 minutes required. The morning hours, when morning light illuminates the rocky face of Kyoshumine, offer the most refreshing views.
