Pay Respects at the Head Shrine of all Hachiman Shrines, the Vermillion Upper Shrine

The chief shrine of Hachiman shrines, of which there are said to be some 40,000 throughout Japan. Dedicated to the Hachiman Deity, the Consort Goddess, and Empress Jingū, the expansive grounds are enveloped in a deep grove. Cross the sacred bridge spanning the Yorishigegawa River, pass beneath the great torii gate, proceed along the main approach, and ascend the stone steps to reach the Upper Shrine, where the National Treasure main hall sits enshrined on a gentle hilltop. The successive vermillion-painted shrine buildings in the distinctive Hachiman architectural style are breathtaking. Visitors traditionally pay respects using the unique ritual of "two bows, four claps, one bow." The practice of visiting both the Upper and Lower Shrines—known as "both shrines worship"—is an ancient custom. With many sights to see, including the wooden Kurehashi Bridge with its roof, a morning walk through the crisp air seems to purify one's very spirit.
Tips
The grounds are expansive, and the approach to the Upper Shrine features stone pavement and stone steps leading uphill, so wear comfortable shoes. Following the custom of "both shrines worship," be sure to visit both the Upper and Lower Shrines. The famous Usa candy is sold at shops along the approach. For a peaceful visit with fewer crowds, early morning is highly recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 hours required. Early morning, when visitor numbers are low and the grove's air is crisp and clear, is the most serene time to visit.
