Marvel at the Full-Scale Reproduction of Bukiji Temple's Main Hall

About this spot

Located near Usa Shrine in the historic park "Usa Fudoki-no-Oka," where ancient burial mounds dot the landscape, this museum's greatest attraction is a full-scale reproduction of Bukiji Temple's Main Hall, known as Kyushu's oldest wooden building. The interior brilliantly restores the polychrome murals that once adorned the hall, allowing visitors to experience stepping into the sacred space of prayer in ancient times. The actual Main Hall is located in Bungo-Takada, which you will visit later. The museum features abundant materials conveying the faith of Usa Hachiman and the Rokugō Manzan culture that flourished across the Kunisaki Peninsula. A full-scale replica of the Kumano Magaibutsu rock-carved Buddha is equally impressive. This intellectual venue allows you to preview the cultural context of your afternoon walk through Bungo-Takada in the comfort of the air-conditioned interior.

Tips

Excellent access—just a few minutes by car from Usa Shrine. For your tour, it's recommended to focus your time on the full-scale Bukiji Temple Main Hall reproduction. The surrounding Fudoki-no-Oka park, where you can walk among ancient mounded burial sites, is a pleasant grassy area worth exploring if time allows. The museum's air conditioning makes it ideal for a summer break.
