A representative scenic spot of Kujo, where the Naruko River—a tributary of the Kuzu River—has carved a deep gorge with towering cliffs rising on both banks. Along the gorge runs a winding road called 'Thirteen Curves,' and with each turn, the landscape of rock faces and greenery changes its expression. From the observation deck, you can take in the sheer cliffs and valley in a single glance, and the views—from fresh spring greenery to autumn foliage—shift with the seasons, making it perfect as the prelude to your drive. Teahouses along the road invite you to rest and enjoy the gorge's beauty. Since you'll later view this same gorge from above at the Kuju Dream Grand Suspension Bridge, comparing the perspective from the valley floor with the aerial view is one of this course's unique pleasures.
Tips
The winding road features continuous curves and some narrow sections, so drive carefully. The observation deck parking lot has limited spaces, so arriving early on autumn foliage weekends is recommended. Motion sickness medication can be helpful for those prone to car sickness.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. The morning light penetrating the valley in the morning hours keeps the air clear and the gorge's greenery vibrant.
