About this spot

A mountain hot spring resort at about 1,000 meters above sea level, at the foot of Mt. Yuugadake (涌蓋山), where steam rises into the air; it's counted among the 'Kokonoe Kyuto' (九重九湯), the nine hot springs of Kokonoe. The name 'Sujiyu' (筋湯, 'muscle-strand hot water') is said to come from the belief that its water is good for stiff muscles - a historic hot spring village. Narrow lanes of stone steps and slopes run along the hillside, and the hot spring town, where inns line up shoulder to shoulder, is full of travel atmosphere just to walk through. Steam rises here and there from the alleys, and the sight of it glowing white in the evening light is a fitting scene to close out a highland journey. Browse the souvenir shops, take in the view of the hot spring town from atop the stone steps, and savor the lingering feeling of the day with a leisurely stroll.

Tips

The lanes of the hot spring town have many stone steps and slopes, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Small shops and souvenir stores sometimes take cash only, so it's reassuring to have some coins ready. At this high elevation, evenings can get cold quickly, so don't forget a jacket. The road home continues through the mountains, so it's recommended to set off before it gets dark.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. The time when the low evening light makes the rising steam glow white is the most atmospheric.
