Walking the Wooden Boardwalk Through a Ramsar-Registered Highland Wetland

Spread across a highland at approximately 1,000 meters elevation at the base of Mimata-yama in the Kujo mountain range, this wetland is registered under the Ramsar Convention alongside Bōgatsuru in the mountains. As one of Japan's largest intermediate-level wetlands, the wooden boardwalk winding through it allows you to fully experience seasonal wildflowers, the wind passing through the grassland, and the Kujo peaks rising behind you. The boardwalk offers options from a short 20-minute loop to a longer hour-long course, allowing you to choose based on your stamina. The grassland landscape, preserved through controlled burning, greets you with different expressions each visit—from spring's fresh green grass to autumn's golden Japanese pampas grass.
Tips
Some sections of the boardwalk require yielding to oncoming walkers, so move aside courteously and stroll unhurriedly. There are no shops or vending machines in the wetland, so bring drinks in advance. Highland weather changes quickly; bring a light rain jacket and extra clothing even on sunny days. Do not step off the boardwalk onto the wetland itself.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 25 minutes. Afternoon light illuminating the grassland creates deep shadows in the mountains, ideal for photography.
