About this spot

A communal bathhouse beloved for generations as the symbol of Beppu Hot Spring, distinguished by its imposing wooden structure crowned with a curved karhafu roof. This grand edifice suddenly appears in a narrow alley near Beppu Station—truly awe-inspiring. It is also famous for its signature sand bath. Today's focus is viewing the exterior. Gaze upon the beautiful curves of the roof and the textured timber from the main plaza, then stroll through the adjacent Takegawara-Koji—one of Japan's oldest wooden shopping arcades. Soft light filtering through the skylight windows illuminates the retro storefronts lining the narrow street, evoking the nostalgic charm of a hot spring town. This is the perfect spot for capturing quintessential Beppu photographs.

Tips

Viewing the exterior and strolling the arcade are free. The building's front is easiest to photograph in the morning when light is optimal. The area has narrow streets and limited parking, so walking from Beppu Station is recommended. Remember this is a lived-in neighborhood—walk quietly and respectfully while enjoying photographs.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 45 minutes. The mid-morning period, when foot traffic is light and the building can be leisurely appreciated, is ideal.
