A roadside station at the entrance to Sagaseki Peninsula, reached by driving east along Route 197 from central Oita. Sagaseki is famous for sekiaji and sekisaba—premium fish hand-caught in the fast-moving currents. The shop displays an array of dried fish, processed seafood, and souvenirs from the bounty of the Toyoyohaikyaku Strait, making it perfect for carrying home the gifts of this coastal region. The ocean-facing location is superb, and gazing at the blue waters while taking a break elevates your drive immensely. Local citrus-flavored soft serve and other light snacks are popular, making this the ideal rest and shopping stop before heading to the observation deck.
Tips
Most seafood products are refrigerated; bring a cooler bag for safe transport. Parking can be crowded on weekend afternoons. The road to Sekisaki Kaisei Hall is narrow, so use the restroom here before heading out.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Afternoon light showcases the brilliant blue of the Toyoyohaikyaku Strait best.
