Ancient Shrine Venerating the Sacred Cave Where Amaterasu Withdrew

This ancient shrine venerates the sacred cave called Amanoiwato, said to be where Amaterasu Ōmikami withdrew after despairing over the wild conduct of her younger brother Susanoo no Mikoto. The West Main Hall and East Main Hall face each other across the Iwato River. At the West Main Hall—the starting point of this journey—a viewing stand behind the main building allows visitors to bow in reverence toward the sacred realm across the ravine. Amanoiwato remains protected as forbidden ground today and cannot be entered directly. The precincts feature a kagura (sacred dance) hall that transmits this ancient performance tradition, as well as the shrine's sacred trees. The sound of wind rustling through the towering cedar groves makes the early morning sanctuary an ideal place to prepare spiritually for entering the world of myth.
Tips
Visitors must register at the West Main Hall's shrine office and be guided by a priest to the viewing stand. Early morning brings fewer visitors and a serene atmosphere ideal for quiet worship. From the precincts, the path down to Amanokawahara is steep, so a backpack that keeps your hands free is practical. Collect your shrine stamp (goshuin) at the office after paying respects.

Allow approximately 1 hour. Early morning offers the fewest visitors and clearest air, creating the most serene and sacred atmosphere.
