The Great Cavern Where Eight Million Gods Gathered and Countless Stacked Stones

This riverbed is where tradition holds that the eight million gods assembled to plan their response when Amaterasu Ōmikami withdrew to Amanoiwato and darkness covered the world. A 10-minute walk from Amanoiwato Shrine's West Main Hall along the riverside path brings you to a spacious cavern known as Gyōboshigafu (仰慕ヶ窟), within which stands a small shrine and torii gate. Over time, a custom arose for visitors to stack stones as they pray for their wishes. Today, both the cavern and the riverbed are blanketed with stacked stones as far as the eye can see, creating a mystical landscape unlike anywhere else. Surrounded by the sound of the stream and soft light filtering into the cave, this is Takachiho's most sacred site—a place where one naturally walks in hushed reverence.

Tips

The riverside path features stone steps and wet rocks, so sturdy, slip-resistant footwear is essential. The area around the cave is dimly lit, so watch your footing carefully. The stacked stones carry the wishes of others, so please do not disturb them. Avoid visiting after heavy rain, when the river may swell dangerously.
