Tour an Abandoned Railroad Tunnel Now Housing Shochu Barrel Storage

About this spot

This unique facility repurposes an abandoned tunnel from the phantom Kyushu Transverse Railroad as a shochu storage cellar. The tunnel, over 1,000 meters long, maintains stable temperatures year-round—ideal for aging shochu. Inside, oak barrels line the passages, illuminated by amber lighting to create a sight found nowhere else on earth. Visitors can explore the storage tunnel free of charge, and as you enter, cool air and the aroma of aging spirits greet you. The grounds also feature a souvenir shop and exhibits of an actual steam locomotive, making it perfect for your final souvenir hunt. Here, the unfulfilled dreams of a railroad live on as the resting place of fine spirits—a location rich with story.

Tips

Bring a light jacket or cardigan, as the tunnel remains cool even in summer. Aged shochu makes a wonderful souvenir but is heavy; consider bringing an extra bag for transport. The SL (steam locomotive) display on the grounds is popular with railroad-loving children.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 10 minutes. Late afternoon offers a pleasant escape from the sun as you walk through the cool, comfortable tunnel passages.
