Shrine of Arts and Love Matches Where You Strike Wooden Plaques to Make Wishes
About this spot
This shrine is dedicated to Sarutahiko no Mikoto, who guided the heavenly descent, and Amenouzume no Mikoto, who performed a dance before Amanoiwato—a divine couple. Legend holds that when these two deities were united and established their home, they hastily constructed their shrine from freshly cut timber, giving the shrine its name (aradate means "rough wood"). The pairing of the god of pathmaking and the god of the performing arts grants this shrine renown for blessings of love and artistic advancement, attracting many performers. Throughout the precincts stand wooden plaques called "Shichifuku Tokuju Itagi" (Seven-Virtues Longevity Plaques), and tradition says that striking each one seven times will grant your wish. The sound of wooden plaques echoing among the trees creates a warm, heartfelt place of prayer.
Tips
Strike the plaques gently and slowly seven times while focusing on your wish—not with brute force. The precincts are compact, so worship can be completed in a short time. The surrounding area is residential, so please maintain a respectful, quiet demeanor. The shrine is close to Takachiho's center and accessible by car.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 40 minutes. Early afternoon, when dappled sunlight filters through the trees, bathes the precincts in gentle light.
