A Lovers' Sacred Place Overlooking Nobeoka City and the Hyuga-nada Sea

About this spot

At the summit of Atago Mountain (標高約250m), which rises to the south of Nobeoka city, a grand observatory awaits with sweeping panoramas encompassing the city, the winding Gokase River, and the Hyuga-nada Sea stretching beyond. Local legend tells of two deities from Japanese mythology, Ninigi-no-Mikoto and Konohanasakuya-hime, meeting on this mountain—a romantic tale that led to its designation as a "lovers' sacred place." A bell and monuments are installed at the summit to commemorate this distinction. The ease of driving to near the mountain's peak is another attractive feature, and at twilight, the city and sea bathe in crimson hues before gradually transforming into a jeweled nightscape. For a perfect conclusion to a day spent exploring the birthplace of this iconic dish, no viewing spot could be more fitting.

Tips

You can drive to the summit, but the road has many curves, so drive cautiously. Evening winds can feel chilly, so bring a light jacket. If you plan to stay until nightfall to see the city lights, a small flashlight to illuminate the path on your return will provide peace of mind.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. As twilight approaches, the city and Hyuga-nada Sea are bathed in crimson light—an exceptional view.
