An ancient shrine facing Hyuga Nada, dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami and affectionately known as "Hyuga's Ise Shrine." The shrine building stands impressively on wave-battered rocks, creating a striking scene. Beyond this iconic view, the shrine grounds house what is believed to be Japan's largest collection of sazare-ishi pebbles—small stones that symbolize unity and strength—including one that appears to depict a dragon cradling a sacred orb. Further intrigue awaits at the adjacent Uto Shrine (鵜戸神社), where gazing back at the entrance of its sea cave reveals an illuminated form resembling an ascending dragon, a mystical vision created by light and stone. This is a spiritually renewing spot where the sea, rocks, and light interweave their magic.
Tips
The shrine building is just a short walk from the parking area. To reach the ascending dragon cave, you'll need to descend rocky terrain, so wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. On days with high waves, be cautious as rocks may be wet. The cave interior is dark, so adjust your camera or smartphone settings for better lighting before photographing.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Morning visits are recommended when clear light makes the sea and shrine sparkle brilliantly.
