Near the tip of Hyuga Cape, approximately 70-meter cliffs of columnar jointed rock rise vertically on both sides of a narrow, wave-cut inlet—Hyuga's most iconic scenic landmark. The rock face features columnar jointing, natural hexagonal columns formed as lava cooled and solidified, creating a sculptural masterpiece of nature. The cape's name derives from the craggy rock wall resembling a horse's back. A walking trail leads to two observation points: one overlooking the inlet from directly above, and another at the cape's tip with a glass-floored observation deck offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Hyuga Nada that fills the entire horizon. A brilliant white lighthouse stands nearby, its contrast with the blue sea creating a refreshing sight.

Tips

The walk from the parking area to the observation deck takes about 10 minutes each way, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The cape experiences strong winds frequently, so secure your hat. Shade is limited in summer, so bring drinking water. If the transparent deck unsettles you, the earlier observation point offers equally magnificent views.
