South from Aoshima along National Route 220, the highlight of the Hyuga Phoenix Road—the coastal highway—is Horikiri Pass. As you crest the pass, the grand panorama of the Pacific Ocean spreads beyond the avenue of phoenix palms, and below, the Oni-no-Sentakuita (the Demon's Washboard) ripples along the shoreline in multiple layers. The view combines three elements perfectly—the azure sea, the subtropical tree-lined avenue, and the orderly wave-carved rock formations—and has long been cherished as one of Miyazaki's signature landscapes. A walking path with ocean vistas has been developed along the roadside, and a leisurely stroll while breathing in the sea breeze allows you to feel the vastness of the horizon with your entire being. This is the Hyuga Coast's finest scenic viewpoint—worth stopping the car to fully savor.

Tips

Parking near the pass is limited, so during busy times, consider parking at Michi-no-Eki Phoenix (a short distance ahead) and walking the pathway back to the pass. The seaside area can be windy on some days, so secure your hat. The road has many curves, so drive carefully.
