Leisurely Stroll Along the Canal That Transported Obi Cedar to Yumemi Bridge
About this spot
A canal excavated during the Edo period by the Obi domain to transport their specialty Obi cedar to Abutsutsu port. Connecting the Hirowatari River to Abutsutsu Port, cedar timbers once traveled across its waters after being felled in the mountains. Today, stone embankments still evoke the past, and the Yumemi Bridge (夢見橋) spanning the canal, built generously with Obi cedar, is a popular leisurely stroll destination. The afternoon light reflecting the sky and townscape on the water is especially beautiful—perfect for a relaxed walk pondering the port town's history. Scenic, atmospheric landscapes surround the area, having served as film shooting locations, making this a delightful district for street photography.
Tips
The canal-side area has little shade, so bring a hat and drinks during summer. Yumemi Bridge and stone embankments are highly photogenic, so have your camera ready. Since Abutsutsu Akarenga Hall is within walking distance, parking near Abutsutsu and exploring both areas together is efficient.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. The gentle afternoon light tenderly illuminates the water and stone embankments.
