The Samurai Residence and Dry-Landscape Garden of the Clan Lord's Family
About this spot
A residence connected to the Obi clan lord Itō family, standing just beside the Ōte Gate (大手門) of Obi Castle. The residence is named after a large camphor tree (yosyō) that once stood on the grounds. Its formal gate and simple yet dignified main building exemplify samurai residence architecture. The highlight is the dry-landscape garden (karesansui) spreading south of the main building. The elegant garden, with white sand, stone arrangements, and carefully trimmed shrubs, is said to be one of Obi's finest, and gazing at it from the veranda, you'll feel time flow slowly. A must-visit spot during your Obi walk, where the refinement and aesthetic sense of the castle town are concentrated.
Tips
The garden's charm is best appreciated by sitting on the veranda and observing it slowly. Some areas require removing shoes, so wearing slip-on shoes will be more comfortable. Given its location directly across from the Ōte Gate, it's also enjoyable to observe the gates of nearby samurai residences while walking to and from the site.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. The white sand is especially beautiful when afternoon light illuminates it.
