40-Meter Falls and Scallop Holes Viewed from a Suspension Bridge

About this spot

A magnificent waterfall standing approximately 40 meters wide and 18 meters high, selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. Standing on the suspension bridge stretched across the waterfall's face, you'll hear the roar and feel spray reaching your face—an exhilarating sensation of being showered by the falls. The riverbed upstream features countless scallop holes (potholes) carved by flowing water over ages, forming what is considered one of the world's most significant concentrations, designated as a national natural monument. Here you can enjoy both the thundering falls and the quietly timeless formations of the scallop holes—a natural artwork showcasing Miyakonojo's pride.

Tips

The walking paths and suspension bridge may be wet from spray, so wear non-slip shoes. After heavy rain, water volume increases dramatically for maximum impact, but exercise extra caution on footing. Bring a towel to dry your face and hands after getting sprayed. The scallop holes can be viewed from observation points on the upper reaches.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Daytime visits offer sparkling spray and excellent photo opportunities.
