The Blue Hot Spring Waterfall and the Spectacular Steam of Maruo Falls
About this spot
A powerful waterfall cascading into a valley beside the national highway at the entrance to the Kirishima hot spring district. Called the "hot spring waterfall" because hot spring water flows into the upper stream, it is a rare sight in all of Japan. The waterfall pool is dyed a mystical blue with a milky tint from hot spring minerals, and during early morning and evening when temperatures are lower, steam rises from the surface, creating a scene as enchanting as a scroll painting. The walking path overlooking the falls offers a close view of the white water column cascading into the green valley. It would be a shame to pass by without stopping—a waterfall truly unique to Kirishima. Position your camera and take time to capture the striking contrast between the blue pool and white steam.
Tips
Parking space is limited; please be considerate and keep visits brief. The highway nearby experiences heavy traffic, so exercise caution when moving about. Steam rises most densely and dramatically during cooler morning and evening hours, making these times ideal for photography.
Best time to visit
Approximately 30 minutes. Cooler times of day produce thicker, more dramatic steam.
