Kinmon Peak Across the Sea and the Sea Pond, Praised by Surveyor Ino Tadataka
About this spot
A seaside park on a cape jutting into the East China Sea, famed as "the finest view under heaven" according to surveyor Ino Tadataka, who created Japan's maps. The name derives from a Satsuma domain checkpoint that once stood here. The graceful, cone-shaped Kinmon Peak (開聞岳) rises majestically across the sea, instantly explaining why it's called "Satsuma's Mount Fuji." Rocky reefs at the cape's tip encircle the sea in a ring, forming a natural pool called "Umi no Ike" (Sea Pond), which according to local legend was a resting place for dragons. Following the footpath, you can enjoy the sound of waves, sea breezes, and the ever-changing views of Kinmon Peak—a signature scenic spot representing southern Satsuma.
Tips
The footpath's end approaches rocky areas, but please exercise caution around splashing waves and uneven ground. Bring a hat as there are few shaded areas. On clear, bright days when the air is crisp, Kinmon Peak's ridgeline is distinctly visible and photogenic.
