Tsubo Field with Sakurajima Views and Traditional Black Vinegar Production Tour & Tasting

About this spot

Located on a hilltop in Fukuyama-cho, Kirishima City, this is the black vinegar information center of Sakamoto Brewing. Before you stretches the tsubo field, lined with over 50,000 Satsuma-ware earthen pots, offering an unparalleled view of Kinko Bay and Sakurajima volcano beyond—a landscape found nowhere else. Fukuyama black vinegar is made using traditional methods, where rice, koji mold, and underground water are fermented and aged outdoors in pots, harnessing the sun's power. The exhibition hall explains this process and history in an easy-to-understand way. Tasting black vinegar drinks and shopping at the gift shop, which displays black vinegars of varying aging years, are highlights of the visit. Savor fully the landscape unique to the black vinegar region, where hillsides lined with pots blend with sea and volcano.

Tips

The tsubo field is outdoors with little shade from the sun, so a hat and sunscreen are recommended. Tours and tastings are free and easy to enjoy casually. Black vinegar souvenirs are mostly bottled and can get heavy, so load purchases into your car first to move around more easily. Since lunch is planned at the next stop, Kakuita, focus here on the scenery and tastings.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes required. Early morning, when the air is clear, offers crisp views of Sakurajima across the tsubo field.
