Tinu Beach (ティーヌ浜)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A small beach on the north side of Kouri Island, famous for Heart Rock (ハートロック), a heart-shaped formation carved by wave erosion, and one of the signature sights of Kouri Island, the “Island of Love.” From certain angles, two separate rocks appear to overlap into a single heart shape. Since being featured in a TV commercial, it has become a hugely popular photo spot drawing visitors from all over Japan. Kouri Island is also home to an Okinawan version of the Adam and Eve legend about the origins of humankind, said to be the source of the island's “Island of Love” nickname. The combination of Heart Rock and the shallow sea shimmering in the evening light promises the perfect closing shot for your drive.

Tips

Reaching the beach involves an unpaved path and slope, so sneakers are safer than sandals. Nearby parking lots are often privately run and may require cash payment. There are few shops or shady spots, so bring your own drinks, and watch your footing at the water's edge.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. Around low tide it's easier to walk right up to Heart Rock, and the evening light is beautiful too.
