Iconic Photo Spot on the Island of Love: Encounter the Heart Rock

About this spot

A small beach on the north side of Kouri Island, renowned for the Heart Rock, a heart-shaped stone formation created by wave erosion, and a signature scenic spot of Kouri Island, the Island of Love. When viewed from certain angles, the two rocks overlap to appear as a single heart, and the spot has become a popular photography destination attracting visitors nationwide since appearing in a television commercial. Kouri Island preserves a local legend akin to the Okinawan version of Adam and Eve, which is said to be the origin of the island's name as the Island of Love. The interplay of heart-shaped rocks glimmering in the evening light and shallow waters promises a perfect concluding photograph for your drive.

Tips

The path to the beach is unpaved with slopes, so sneakers are safer than sandals. The nearby parking lot is privately operated and may require cash payment. With limited shops and shade, bring drinking water and exercise caution around the water's edge.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. Just before and after low tide allows easier access close to the Heart Rock, and the evening light is particularly beautiful.
