A Celebrated Sunset Spot: White Lighthouse, Towering Cliffs, and the East China Sea

About this spot

A dramatic scenic spot on the western tip of central Okinawa's main island where raised coral reef cliffs approximately 30 meters high stretch for about 2 kilometers. A pristine white Zanpa Cape Lighthouse stands at the cape's tip, its form striking against the blue sea and sky—one of Yomitan's defining landscapes. Walking along the promenade while viewing waves breaking against the cliffs envelops you in an openness befitting the journey's finale. Zanpa Cape truly shines at dusk. It's renowned as a premier sunset-viewing location, where the sky and sea shift from crimson to gold, creating a natural masterpiece to conclude a day spent with handmade ceramics. Time your visit to the sunset hour for the perfect grand finale.

Tips

Some sections of the cliff edge have no railings, so while photographing, pay attention to your footing. The cape is exposed with strong winds, so having a light jacket is comfortable. Sunset times vary greatly by season, so check the day's sunset time in advance and plan your arrival accordingly. The lighthouse can sometimes be visited (admission fee).

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Aim to arrive 30 minutes before sunset so you can witness the sky's color gradient from beginning to end.
