Grand Panorama Over Kin Bay from the UNESCO World Heritage Gusuku
About this spot
One of the gusuku (castle ruins) comprising the UNESCO World Heritage site "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Ryukyu Kingdom," and said to be among the oldest surviving gusuku in Okinawa. Known as the residence of the warlord Amamichi, it displays graceful curved stone walls layering across gentle slopes. From the topmost curve of the main enclosure reached by stone steps, a vast panorama opens: Kin Bay, the islands of Uruma, and the marine road highway you're about to travel. At the Amawaripāku (あまわりパーク) cultural facility at the base, exhibits and videos introduce the gusuku's history; your admission ticket covers both the ruins and the facility.
Tips
Wear comfortable walking shoes—the route to the summit has stone-paved slopes and stairs. Few shaded areas, so bring a hat and water. Visiting Amawaripāku first to preview the history makes the stone walls far more dimensional and striking.
Best time to visit
Plan about 1 hour 15 minutes. Climbing in the morning before the sun grows intense is most comfortable; on clear days the views are exceptional.
