A Thrilling Straight Drive Over the Sea: 4.7 km Kaichū Dōro (海中道路)

About this spot

A 4.7 km road built on shallow waters connecting Okinawa Main Island's Yōkatsu Peninsula to Heianза Island. Rather than a bridge, this road is built on the seabed itself, with emerald green waters stretching wide on both sides of your vehicle—a driving experience rivaling any in Okinawa. It serves as the gateway to the islands beyond: from Heian Island, you can bridge to Miyagi Island, Ikei Island, and Hamahiga Island (浜比嘉島). Road parks and a sea station at the midpoint let you stop and walk on the beach. The seascape transforms constantly with tides and driving times, offering entirely different views depending on when you pass through.

Tips

No roadside parking allowed; stop at the road park or sea station parking area midway. Avoid the noon rush on weekends by passing through in the morning. Bring sunglasses—the glare off the water can strain driving comfort.

Best time to visit

Plan about 25 minutes. During high tide, blue waters press close on both sides—the most photogenic time.
