The royal castle that was the center of politics, diplomacy, and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The ruins of Shuri Castle are registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu." Passing through the Shureimon (Shureimon Gate) bearing the plaque "Land of Courtesy," then through Kankaimon (Kankaimon Gate) and Zuisenmon (Zuisenmon Gate), your spirit is transported to the royal era with each gate you pass. The castle walls, forming gentle curves, are distinctly Ryukyuan in style, entirely different from castles on the main island, and from the elevated grounds within the park, you can see the entire townscape of Naha and the sea beyond. The main palace, destroyed by fire, is currently undergoing restoration work, and from the viewing area, you can observe up close how the royal castle is being brought back to life through the craftsmanship of skilled workers. The contrast of red and white against the blue sky makes this a fitting starting point for Okinawa's historical exploration.
Tips
The park features many stone steps and slopes, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. On sunny days, don't forget a hat and water to stay hydrated. The paid access area around the main palace requires an entrance ticket from the ticket office. The early morning hours right after opening are relatively quiet and ideal for photography.
