The Katsushika Cool Evening Fireworks Festival (葛飾納涼花火大会) is Katsushika Ward's signature summer fireworks event, held every year in late July around Shibamata Baseball Field (柴又野球場) on the Edo River riverbank. Boasting around 20,000 shells, one of the largest counts in Tokyo, large starmine and shakudama (giant shells) bloom one after another across the night sky. With the Edo River's wide riverbank offering few obstructions, one of its charms is being able to look straight up at the fireworks from up close and see them at a large scale. The finale, a continuous barrage lasting about an hour, lights up the entire riverbank with overwhelming force, a fitting climax to a summer night. Enjoy this uniquely Katsushika fireworks festival, combined with the old-town charm of Shibamata.

Tips

Check Katsushika Ward's official announcements for whether the event will proceed in case of bad weather. After it ends, the routes back toward Shibamata Station and Keisei Kanamachi Station become extremely crowded. It's recommended to enjoy the afterglow on the riverbank for a while after the finale, then move once the crowd flow has settled down. Since it's dark underfoot, having your smartphone's flashlight on hand is reassuring.
