About this spot

Just a short walk from Nabari Station (名張駅), this area preserves the old townscape that once flourished as the castle town of the Todo Domain (藤堂藩). Around Honmachi (本町) and Shinmachi (新町), white-walled townhouses and storehouses line the streets, and simply strolling the narrow alleys lets you feel the atmosphere of history. Merchant houses dating from the Edo period are scattered throughout, and the calm, old-fashioned charm makes it perfect for a summer afternoon walk. The area is well maintained as a tourist hub with plenty of information boards, so even families visiting for the first time can walk around without getting lost. Getting to know Nabari's historical side during the daytime before the fireworks adds extra depth to your day.

Tips

About a 5-10 minute walk from Kintetsu Nabari Station (近鉄名張駅). No special admission fee is required. The midsummer sun is strong during the day, so don't forget a hat and to stay hydrated. Streets in the old town area are narrow, so folding up your stroller can make it easier to get around in some places.
