Located near Fukuchiyama Castle, Goryo Shrine (御靈神社) is one of the rare shrines nationwide that enshrines Akechi Mitsuhide as a spiritual guardian (goryo). Positioned in a district that retains traces of the castle town Mitsuhide administered, the shrine grounds offer a quiet and serene atmosphere. Since the broadcast of the historical drama series, the number of visitors seeking out places connected to Mitsuhide has increased, and you can see worshippers praying and collecting votive plaques (ema) and temple seals (goshuin) related to Mitsuhide. Combined with a visit to Fukuchiyama Castle, this is a wonderful spot where you can experience history firsthand while walking through the castle town. The shrine grounds are compact and modest in scale, making it ideal for families to stop by briefly.
Tips
About 5 minutes on foot from Fukuchiyama Castle Ruins Park. Worship is free. If you wish to receive a goshuin (temple seal), please check the office hours in advance. Walking through the alleyways of the castle town on the way adds to the charm of the old townscape.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. The tree shade is pleasantly cool, making midday visits ideal.
