About this spot

Fukuchiyama Castle is a fortress that Akechi Mitsuhide developed after subjugating Tanba during the Tensh­o era, and it is cherished as a symbol of Fukuchiyama. The current tenshu was restored in 1986 based on the architectural style of the early Edo period, and its interior functions as a local history museum displaying exhibits about Mitsuhide and Fukuchiyama's history. From the top floor of the tenshu, you can see the entire Fukuchiyama Basin where the Yura River and its tributary, the Haji River (土師川), converge—and you can also spot the riverbed where tonight's fireworks will light up. The stone walls incorporate stones called tensuyoseki (reused stones)—tombstones and stone buddhas—making it an engaging spot for history enthusiasts and children alike. The wooded areas of the castle ruins park remain cool even in midsummer, offering a perfect place to catch your breath.

Tips

About 15 minutes on foot from Fukuchiyama Station, or by bus to the Shitamachi (castle town) bus stop. Admission is 330 yen for adults. Note that the tenshu has steep stairs, so be careful with small children. Castle seals (gojoin stamps) are sold inside the tenshu. Open 9 AM–5 PM (last admission 4:30 PM).

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. The white walls look best in afternoon light, and the views from the tenshu are most vivid at this time.
