The Chikugogawa Fireworks Festival (筑後川花火大会) is one of Kyushu's leading fireworks festivals, held jointly across three venues in Kurume, Yamaga, and Tosu, with about 12,000 shells launched at the Tosu venue alone. Watching from the riverbank, close to the water's surface, delivers the power of fireworks light and sound coming straight at you, and the shimmering reflections on the river surface further enhance the beauty of the fireworks. From large shakudama shells to vividly colored star-mine sequences, the hour-long program that colors the night sky one after another is thoroughly satisfying to watch. The moment the finale's rapid bursts light up both the night sky and the river surface at once makes for the best possible close to this day.

Tips

Check the festival's official information on the day for announcements on whether the event will proceed in case of severe weather. The area around Tosu Station gets extremely crowded after the show, so rather than moving right away, enjoying the afterglow on the riverbank for a bit makes it easier to avoid the crowds. Some areas are dark underfoot on the way back, so a smartphone flashlight or small light will help keep you safe. Since the next day is a weekday, families with children should plan ahead for their return time.
