Japan's Largest-Scale Reconstructed Main Castle Residence and 45-Meter Tatami-Matted Great Hall

A part of Saga Castle's main residence reconstructed as Japan's largest-scale wooden building. Once you remove your shoes and enter the residence, a 45-meter tatami-matted great hall stretches before you, allowing you to experience the expansive space where the daimyo conducted his affairs. Inside the museum, the scientific achievements of the late Edo Saga clan—which pioneered reverberatory furnaces, steam engines, and Armstrong cannons—and the footsteps of great figures such as Shigenobu Okuma are introduced clearly through models and videos. The Shachi Gate at the entrance is a precious remaining structure of Saga Castle and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Admission is free (with voluntary donations based on satisfaction), which is remarkable, making it an essential must-see spot filled with Saga's pride.
Tips
Since shoes are removed inside the residence, it's convenient to wear easy-to-remove footwear. Although admission is free, there is a donation box at the exit, so prepare small change to contribute comfortably. Requesting a volunteer guide's tour makes the late Edo Saga story much more vivid and dimensional.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. Early morning after opening has fewer visitors, allowing you to savor the tatami great hall quietly.
