Enshrined in the center of Karatsu City, this is the guardian shrine of all Karatsu. The annual 'Karatsu Kunchi' (唐津くんち) festival in November is designated a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and is known nationwide for its vividly decorated floats (曳山, hikiyama) parading through the city. The grounds have a calm atmosphere amid the quiet of the old castle town, and since the Hikiyama Exhibition Hall (曳山展示場), which displays the festival floats, is nearby, you can also see the Karatsu Kunchi floats up close at full scale after visiting. Stopping by leisurely in the afternoon before the fireworks festival and getting a taste of Karatsu's festival culture will further heighten the mood for the evening's celebration.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Karatsu Castle. Visiting the grounds is free. Just nearby, the Karatsu Kunchi Hikiyama Exhibition Hall (曳山展示場) lets you view the actual floats for a fee. The route between the Karatsu Station area and Karatsu Castle makes for a well-suited path that doubles as a stroll through the city center.
