Since opening its port, the Motomachi area of Hakodate flourished as a foreign settlement and features a unique streetscape with churches of different denominations within walking distance—the Russian Orthodox Harisutos Orthodox Church, the Catholic Motomachi Church, and Hakodate St. John the Baptist Church. The area with stone-paved streets and slopes is brimming with Hakodate's characteristic exotic atmosphere, and simply strolling through it offers a taste of the extraordinary. From the plaza in front of the Old Hakodate Ward Public Hall, you can enjoy a clear view of Hakodate Port and have another chance to confirm tonight's fireworks venue. Walk slowly through the landscape where Western mansions and Japanese-Western hybrid buildings intermingle, all bathed in the soft afternoon light.

Tips
荒天時の開催可否は主催の函館新聞社や函館市の公式発表で当日必ず確認を。終了後は周辺の市電乗り場や駐車場が大変混み合うため、花火終了後は少し時間をおいてから移動するのがおすすめ。足元が暗い場所もあるので、スマホのライトを活用して安全に移動を。翌日が平日の方は帰りの交通手段と時刻を事前に確認しておくと安心です。
Tips
The area is just a short walk from the Hakodateyama Ropeway base station. The Old Hakodate Ward Public Hall charges an admission fee (around 300 yen for adults), but you can enjoy the exterior and plaza views for free. The slopes are steep, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The Harisutos Orthodox Church has limited interior viewing hours, so check in advance. The next stop at the Bay Area is about a 15-minute walk from Motomachi, or you can use the tram for convenience.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. The slanting afternoon light beautifully illuminates the church exteriors and stone pavement—a picturesque time of day.
