Visit the World Heritage Kumano Hayatama Taisha (熊野速玉大社), view the bright vermillion-lacquered sacred buildings and the sacred camphor tree
About this spot
One of the three grand Kumano shrines, and a constituent asset of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" (紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道). The shrine grounds are graced with twelve bright vermillion-lacquered sacred buildings and have long drawn pilgrims from across the nation as the spiritual home of "Kumano Gongen" (熊野権現). The great Nagi tree standing within the grounds is a sacred tree over 1,000 years old, its sheer size and presence overwhelming. As Kumano's foremost sacred site within walking distance of Shingu Station, it is the ideal first destination for a day that begins with the fireworks festival. The Kumano Hayatama Taisha Treasure Museum on the grounds houses National Treasure sacred objects and is worth visiting if time permits.

Tips

Turn this into a day plan with stall time includedTips
About 15 minutes on foot from JR Shingu Station (JR新宮駅), or accessible by local bus service. Entry to the shrine grounds is free. The treasure museum requires a separate admission fee; check the official website for details. On the day of the fireworks festival, surrounding roads become congested from evening onward, so it's wise to visit unhurriedly in the early afternoon. If you wish to receive an ema (votive tablet), allow extra time.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. The soft afternoon light beautifully illuminates the vermillion-lacquered sacred buildings, and it is a time when the shrine has fewer visitors.
