Tanabe City is believed to be the birthplace of Musashibo Benkei, the loyal retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, and various historical sites and statues related to Benkei are scattered throughout the city. The bronze statue of Benkei standing in front of JR Kii-Tanabe Station is notably large and eye-catching—a must-see spot for all visitors to Tanabe. His bold, wide-legged stance exudes power and is an extremely popular photo spot with children. Telling children the legend of Benkei's birth in Tanabe while taking a photo together creates an additional memory from your visit to Tanabe. Since it's close to Tougyou Shrine, stopping by after your visit is a natural flow.

Tips
荒天時の開催可否は田辺市や大会主催者の公式発表で必ず確認してください。終了後はJR紀伊田辺駅周辺が混雑するため、フィナーレ後は砂浜で少し余韻を楽しんでから移動する時間差帰宅がおすすめです。足元が暗くなるのでライトを用意しておきましょう。

Located immediately next to JR Kii-Tanabe Station with almost entirely pedestrian access. Free to view. The statue is near the station rotary, so be careful of traffic while taking photos.

Approximately 30 minutes required. The power of the statue comes across well in the midday light.
