Wakayama's oldest temple, said to have been founded in 701, is nationally known as the setting for the legend of Anjin and Kiyohime. Passing through the Nio Gate, you'll find spacious temple grounds, and the main hall houses important cultural property Buddhist statues. In the treasure storehouse containing sacred scrolls and precious artifacts, you can view up close the scroll depicting the famous scene where Kiyohime transforms into a great serpent and coils around the temple bell. The temple grounds, surrounded by trees, remain cool even in summer—an ideal place to spend quiet time before the evening fireworks. Walking through the subsidiary temples along the approach and examining the Buddhist bell will deepen your connection to the legendary world.

2026年8月22日(土)20時から1時間、日高川河川敷から約3,000発が打ち上がる御坊市花火大会の観覧タイムです。川面に映る花火の光が水面を揺れながら広がる景色は、河川敷ならではの見どころです。山あいに響く打ち上げ音と川沿いの涼しい夜風の中で見上げる大輪の花火は、夏の和歌山の夜を鮮やかに彩ります。家族みんなで肩を並べてレジャーシートに座り、フィナーレの連発まで思いきり楽しみましょう。

Tips

荒天時の開催可否は御坊市の公式発表で必ず確認してください。終了後は会場周辺と駐車場への道路が一斉に混雑します。フィナーレ後はしばらく河川敷で余韻を楽しんでから移動すると、帰りの混雑を和らげられます。足元が暗くなるため、小さなライトを用意しておくと安心です。

Tips

Take the Kishu Railway from Gojo Station to Dojo-ji Temple Station, then walk about 3 minutes from the station. Admission is 500 yen for adults (confirm separately if viewing the treasure storehouse is included). Some areas of the temple grounds are free to enter. Even on fireworks day, the daytime sees few visitors, allowing for a peaceful viewing experience.
