A municipal art museum located near the center of Oita City, it houses an extensive collection centered on works by artists with connections to Oita, ranging from modern and contemporary art to woodblock prints and crafts. The building is situated in the verdant Oita City Daido-machi district, and the cool interior with air conditioning allows comfortable visits even on hot summer afternoons. In addition to permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions are held regularly, and there are often experiential displays that children enjoy. Spending a leisurely cultural moment in a cool space before the fireworks night makes for a great start to the day. After enjoying the art, rest in the museum lobby or on outdoor benches before heading to the next destination.

Tips

From JR Oita Station, approximately 10-15 minutes by local bus or about 10 minutes by car. Admission for the permanent exhibition only is around 300 yen for adults, but fees differ during special exhibitions, so check the official website in advance. Note that the museum is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday). Parking available.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. From mid-morning to early afternoon after opening is relatively uncrowded and allows leisurely viewing.
