About this spot

The Tatsuta River, a clear stream flowing through Heguri Town, is also known from Ariwara no Narihira's poem beginning Chihayaburu kamiyo mo kikazu Tatsutagawa. In autumn, the riverside foliage is beautiful, and around the time of the September festival, the greenery is still lush and refreshing. Taking a slow walk along the promenade beside the river opens up the tranquil scenery of Nara's mountain villages, a time that lets you forget the bustle of the city. It's a perfect, pleasant walking course before the fireworks, offering refreshment after all the walking done sightseeing at Horyuji.

Tips

Tatsutagawa Station on the Kintetsu Ikoma Line is the nearest station. Some sections of the riverside promenade are unpaved, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. In the evening, as the sun tilts, the river surface shines beautifully. To prepare for dinner and securing a viewing spot afterward, head toward the fireworks venue by around 4 p.m.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. The sound of the river and the green of the mountains refresh you before the fireworks.
