About this spot

The Ko-no-ji Quay is named for the way it juts out into the bay of Kesennuma Port in a shape resembling the katakana character ko (コ). It's a wide quay where large ships dock, with deep water right from the edge, and it's also popular as a spot for catching rockfish and greenling. The evening scenery, where the fishing boats lined up in the port and the intricate bay come together as one, has a charm unique to a Sanriku port town. Spread out the dinner you picked up from festival stalls or local eateries here, and enjoy the time as the port transforms into its nighttime look.

Tips

On the day of the festival, the area around the quay becomes very crowded from the evening onward. Secure a good viewing spot early. Get your food before the crowds build up (the lines at the stalls get long). It's reassuring to check the location of restrooms while it's still light out. Be careful of the edge of the quay, and keep an eye on small children at all times.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. The port at dusk is the most atmospheric time of the day.
