The lush grounds preserve an impressive gate, main residence, stone warehouses, and a martial arts training hall, and together with well-maintained gardens, they convey the atmosphere of samurai life. The adjacent Miyakonojo Shimazu Heritage Museum allows visitors to trace South Kyushu's history through historical documents and furnishings passed down through the Miyakonojo Shimazu family, offering insight into the deep connection between Clan Shimazu and Miyakonojo. Tips
The main residence can sometimes be viewed with guidance from staff, so check with the reception desk for times to enjoy it more fully. Parking is free. Allow just over an hour if you plan to spend time viewing the Heritage Museum exhibits as well.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Early morning, shortly after opening, sees fewer visitors and the gardens are refreshingly verdant.
