The town of Hagi, where the castle town of the Mouri Clan from the Edo period remains intact, is also listed among the "Meiji Japan's Industrial Revolution Heritage Sites." From Horiuchi District extending to Minami-Furuhagi Town, the samurai residences line the street with white namako-walls and earthen walls that create a feeling of traveling back in time just by walking. The white walls stand out beautifully against the blue summer sky, and the green foliage extending over the walls creates a beautiful contrast—with photogenic spots throughout. Pick up a map at the tourist information center to efficiently explore the highlights of the samurai residences. Many residences offer free exterior viewing, making it easy for the whole family to enjoy a leisurely walk.

2026年8月1日(土)20時打ち上げ開始、萩夏まつりのフィナーレを飾る「萩・日本海大花火大会」です。萩商港から菊ヶ浜にかけての海上から約7,000発が打ち上がり、夜の日本海を鮮やかに彩ります。開けた海上からの打ち上げは花火が大きく見え、遮るものがない砂浜からの観覧は視界が広くて迫力満点です。海面に映る花火の反射光も、海辺の大会ならではの美しさ。城下町萩を1日歩いたあと、白砂の浜に座って日本海から上がる花火を見上げる1時間は、この旅のクライマックスにふさわしいひとときです。
Tips
荒天時の開催可否は大会公式の発表および萩市の案内で確認を。終了後は会場周辺の道路が混雑するため、すぐに車で移動するより浜で少し余韻を楽しんでから動くのがおすすめ。帰りの宿や駐車場までの経路は事前に確認しておきましょう。足元が暗いため小型ライトを用意すると安心です。
Tips
You can access the castle town area by community bus "Hagi Circulation Maール Bus" from Hagi Bus Center or Hagi Station. In summer, bring a hat and sunscreen due to strong sunlight. It's wise to bring drinks for hydration. The next destination, Hagi Castle Ruins, is within walking distance.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes required. Morning to early afternoon is less crowded, allowing you to walk leisurely through the white-wall streets
